The book tour, interviews, and reviews that followed put Clinton in contact with a national audience of celebrity fans and potential voters that the aspiring presidential candidate would recruit into “Hillaryland.” 2 Translations of the book, including the Chinese version, turned her autobiography into a global best seller. Given this possible future for Clinton's autobiography, I want to return to Living History to meditate on the political uses of autobiography in the gendered arena of American presidential politics. It will most likely enter the New York Times best-seller list for a second time. Clinton's 2003 best-selling autobiography Living History will more than likely be reissued sometime before the campaign begins in earnest. Chances are she will have written another book, this one on foreign policy. She'll have her experience as Secretary of State in the Obama administration, international bona fides, and security credibility that expand her claims to formidable expertise. She will be 69 in 2016, not the oldest candidate Ronald Reagan was 69 when elected. But for many politicos, the expectation is that Hillary Clinton will make a second run for the Democratic nomination and then for the White House. So what the candidate line-up will look like in 2016 is far from predictable. As the old canard goes: a year is a millennium in politics.

One of the most interesting features of Freya and most other robots is the absolute conditioned response to serve the humans (for Freya this takes the form of sexual obedience). We are misled, deceived and slave chipped alongside her. We learn with Freya as she uncovers the multiple layers and political intrigue. However what Freya finds out is that this is the least of her problems as some powerful forces in the world want to bring back the humans, and with this, obedience would dominate and any trace remnants of freedom would disappear.įreya is a refreshing character, she does not know anything and is far from being a trained spy. Freya’s main problem is that she was designed when humans were still around to be their perfect concubine, yet now that all humans are extinct, Freya drifts around aimlessly with no purpose to guide her. Best described, this book is a combination of space opera and 007 all told from the perspective of a frank and depressed robot Freya. This book is complex on many levels and the plot constantly unfolds and surprises. Her influence thus went beyond the substantial contribution to feminism with which she is mostly associated and extended to shaping the art of travel writing as a literary genre and, through her account of her journey through Scandinavia, she had an impact on the Romantic movement. Her first publication dealt with the education of daughters she went on to write about politics, history, and various aspects of philosophy in different genres that included critical reviews, translations, pamphlets, and fiction. One of the reasons for this enduring appeal is that her reflections on the status of the female sex were part of a comprehensive understanding of human relations within a civilization she perceived to be increasingly governed by acquisitiveness. While she had a good number of detractors following her death, owing mostly to the publication of details about her private life by her husband, William Godwin (b. 1756–d. 1836), she continued to be and remains an engaging author for feminists and political theorists more generally. She is remembered today principally for her penetrating assessment of the condition of women, but she continues to elicit much interest for her contributions to philosophy, especially political philosophy, and literature, including travel literature. Best known for her Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), Mary Wollstonecraft (b. 1759–d. 1797) was a literary and social critic as well as a moralist, novelist, and philosopher. It's easy to forget how the portraits that emerged in the final years of Chekhov's life – the consumptive, primly dressed, prematurely aged invalid of Yalta – have come to dominate our sense of the writer. You can see in this casual portrait just how attractive a man he was – just what made him so appealing to women. What makes the image memorable is that, because of the relaxed nature of the shot, we gain a glimpse of the private Chekhov. In 1892 Chekhov was 32 and entering the years of his mature fame and success. The festivities took place between the 26 and 30 June 1892. The Chekhov family had gathered with friends at Anton's country estate, Melikhovo, to celebrate his father Pavel's name-day. You feel he might be about to say to the photographer, "Get a bloody move on, will you?" And indeed it's quite possible that he could have uttered such words, as we know that the photographer was his older brother, Alexander, a fact that probably explains the easy, unposed nature of the snapshot.Īnd we can date the photo with some precision. His thick hair is tousled and uncombed and his eyes look a little tired. Chekhov appears to be sitting at a cluttered desk or a table, resting his head on his left hand. It's such an informal shot that it looks surprisingly modern. I keep a photograph of Anton Chekhov on my mantelpiece. It’s believed that The Odyssey and The Iliad come from an oral storytelling tradition. In fact, any glimpse into Homer before medieval times is rare, and any insight into the composition of the epics is precious. If verified, it will be a priceless literary and historical artifact. In a press release, the Greek Culture Ministry says that the preliminary date of the text has been confirmed. The verses are from the epic’s fourteenth book, in which Odysseus speaks to his lifelong friend Eumaeus, the first person he sees on his return from his decade away from home. The tablet was discovered near the ruins of the Temple of Zeus during three years of excavations in the ruins of the ancient city of Olympia on the Greek peninsula the Peloponnese. or earlier, representing the oldest lines of the poet found in the ancient land. But now, reports the BBC, archeologists in Greece have found 13 verses from The Odyssey chiseled into a clay tablet dating to the third century A.D. The ancient papyrus these books were written on rarely survives, meaning that ancient copies of Homer from the lands he wrote about simply don’t exist. You might think that ancient copies of these books are dug up in Greece all the time, but that’s not the case. The epics of the Greek poet Homer, The Iliad and The Odyssey, have been recited around campfires and scrutinized by students for 2,800 years, if not longer. Eventually, however, Easy Company’s harrowing and courageous exploits on the Western front in 19 would be immortalized in the 2001 HBO series Band of Brothers. The Remarkable Rocket is also a tale about egotism and conceit. The Miller in the Devoted Friend is not only selfish but an egotistical hypocrite. The Selfish Giant will not let the children in his garden but repents and is redeemed. In The Happy Prince and The Nightingale and the Rose, Wilde explores love and self sacrifice. Oscar Wilde said of his story The Happy Prince that it was "an attempt to treat a tragic modern problem in a form that aims at delicacy and imaginative treatment it is a reaction against the purely imitative character of modern art.” His Fairy Tales then were only partly written for children and as he said, "partly for those who have kept the childlike faculties of wonder and joy, and who find in simplicity a subtle strangeness".
